Band: Led Zeppelin

While it's true that many these days no longer consider Led Zeppelin to be heavy metal, they were one of the first bands to which the term was attached and it's doubtful that without their pure excess of volume and overblown histrionics that metal could have taken hold the way that it did. Without them, and the unprecedented success they achieved, it's unlikely that bands like Black Sabbath could have enjoyed the popularity they attained. Formed from the ashes of the Yardbirds (a band that also featured, at various times, early guitar innovators like Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck), Led Zeppelin went on to become simply the biggest band ever in terms of album sales and fan adulation by the mid 1970s and it's quite possible that while the band peaked creatively and stylistically with 'Physical Graffiti', they could have continued virtually unchallenged for many more years had the death of John Bonham on September 25, 1980 not brought about the band's demise. THe band reunited for one-off performances at Live Aid and Atlantic's 50th anniversary with guest drummers including Tony Thompson, Phil Collins and Bonham's son Jason.

Their music needs no introduction as any with even a casual interest in music of the last 40 years would be familiar with it; Led Zeppelin left behind a legacy of excess, success and debauchery that could well never be matched.
