Pantera began as a glam rock band and struggled for nearly a decade in the underground. After recruiting vocalist Phil Anselmo, they released the classic thrash metal disc "Cowboys From Hell". With "Vulgar Display of Power", they really hit their stride, in terms of popularity. While the music got heavier, the lyrics got worse, relying too heavily on cussing for shock value. Of course, this only increased their popularity. At the peak of their career, they were one of the most popular metal bands in the world, but things gradually went downhill and Phil Anselmo jumped ship to concentrate on his side projects.

After an extended hiatus, the Abbott brothers decided to form Damageplan, which continues in a similar vein to Pantera.
