Voivod began as a thrash band, somewhat akin to early Metallica and Megadeth. After a couple albums, they began to incorporate more preogressive rock elements into their sound. By the time of Nothingface, which is generally considered to be their best, they had lost pretty much all of their thrash roots and sounded somewhat like a combination of prog and indie rock, with a little bit of metal and punkish vocals. They put out a couple more discs in the same style before Snake and Blacky left the band and were replaced with Eric Forrest. The new direction the band took is, IMO, pretty similar to Neurosis, but not as experimental. I rather enjoyed this sound, but many fans didn't. After putting out two albums with Eric, Voivod disbanded, only to later reform with Snake and Jason Newsted of Metallica. The S/T 2003 release is a return to their mid-period sound with an updated, more polished production. Having Jason in the band have also given this previously underground band some much needed exposure.
