Beginning as a black metal band called Unholy Cadaver, Hammers of Misfortune quickly expanded their sound to be one of the more original avant-garde metal acts playing today. The debut still has a notable black metal influence, but an almost European power metal feel to the lyrics, and plenty of melody in the mix. After that, they turned to an interesting mix of classic metal and folk, that sounds to me like a cross between Iron Maiden and Simon and Garfunkel.  Then they release a 3rd album that sounds most akin to 70s prog, but with a classic metal vibe.

After The Locust Years was released, Mike Scalzi, Jamie Myers, and Chewy Marzolo left the band, but Chewy came back later in 2006.
