GWAR began life as a thrashy punk band called Death Piggy when Brockie came up with the idea for what is perhaps the most over-the-top metal act ever conceived. GWAR's main forte is ridiculous stage imagery and musical satire and the band's actual music has wavered between punk (early) to violent hard rock (mid-period) to thrash (current); band members have come and gone constantly but each newcomer merely takes over the stage identity of his previous inhabitant. For the record, the "characters" in GWAR are Oderus Urungus (vocals), Balsac, the Jaws of Death (guitar), Flattus Maximus (guitar), Beefcake the Mighty (bass) and Jizmak da Gusha (drums) , along with occasional appearances by backing vocalist Slymenstra Hymen.
