Band: Savatage

One of metal's true elite, despite the fact that they are terribly under-rated and for the most part unknown amongst casual metalheads. The band has an immense catalogue, dating back to 1983's heavy/power-metalesque Sirens. Since their debut, the band has evolved from a very good traditional metal band to a mature, epic/rock opera style, however maintaining their heaviness. 1987's Hall of the Mountain King is considered a metal masterpiece by many, as well as the fan-favorite Streets: A Rock Opera. There are many standout albums throught their expansive catalogue, despite the fact that there have been many lineup changes throughout the years, including the death of founding member and guitar virtuoso Criss Oliva in 1993. New, young vocalist Damond Jiniya and guitarist Al Pitrelli (who played in the band on two albums before leaving to join Megadeth) have joined the fold and (at present time) the band is beginning work on their forthcoming thirteenth studio album, spearheaded by longtime member, vocalist/keyboardist Jon Oliva. Savatage is a band that has withstood the test of time and continues to release great symphonic power metal today.
