Kyuss are often credited as the pioneers of the "stoner metal" genre. It was also guitarist Josh Homme's band before he joined Queens of the Stone Age. The band originally started in 1989 under the name Sons of Kyuss, but after releasing just only one album in the following year, this name was simply changed to "Kyuss". To date, Kyuss released four full-length studio albums before splitting up for good in 1996.
