Band: Ragnarok (UK)
Formed in 1988 by Deorth, Morgoth and Cernunnos. A self-titled demo was released in 1991 and after circulating minor rehearsal tapes the band's definitive demo, 'Beloved of the Raven God' was released in 1995. This prompted Neat Records to sign the band which led to the release of the first album To Mend an Oaken Heart in '97.
The style of Ragnarok is likened to a primitive Bathory/Skyclad hybrid with heavy elements of caustic black metal. The use of paganism and folk arrangements makes the sound quite unique and this style became even more noticeable on the release of the 'Domgeorn' album in '99.
The third album was lost at Impulse studios during the resulting chaos when the label was sold but it is believed Deorth located them in 2003 and it is doubtful if the music will ever see the light of day.
It is believed the following two demos were also released:
Ragnarok (Self-titled, 1991)
Völuspá 1991, 4 tracks
Ragnarok were always a slightly peculiar and obscure band, which have been forgotten about. No other band has made such a unique sound involving the use of folk instruments and heavy metal/black metal in this way. Most of the "Domgeorn" album was folk however (possibly 70% folk and 30% BM). Part of the charm of its approach is the fact most of the album is sung in the Anglo-Saxon language and the lyrics were written on a manuscript by the man himself. In addition, he was the creator of all the Ragnarok releases' artwork.
