Fear Factory defied the conventions of death metal by not only combining it with electronic enhancements and sampling but also being one of the first bands to incorporate a "clean" vocal style. They reached perfection with only their second album, Demanufacture, a masterpiece of cyber-industrial death metal that may never be topped. After this they promptly ran out of fresh ideas both conceptually and musically; Obsolete wasn't bad but Digimortal is awful by comparison -- by remaining too extreme for the alternative crowd, yet becoming too alternative for the established fans, Fear Factory sealed its own fate. Digimortal bombed and the band effectively split up in early 2002 after a falling out between Bell and Cazares. A year later, the band reformed without Cazares and issued the much stronger Archetype album. Nonetheless, the band's fortunes have dived since Cazares departed and probably no one was surprised when it was announced he had rejoined in mid-09.
