Athiest is one of the most influential tech/death metal bands to emerge from the Florida death metal scene. The band released "Piece of Time" to the metal masses in 89' and began to blow everyone's minds with the assault of speed metal chops combined with jazz-style drum patterns, and abrasive death metal vocals. Tragically, bassist Roger Patterson would not see another Atheist album; he was killed in an auto accident in 1990. The band continued on in Roger's memory and released the classic "Unquestionable Presence" in 1991 with ex-Cynic/Pestilence bassist Tony Choy filling in. Atheist took another stab at it and released the tech-metal masterpeice "Elements" before calling it a day in 1995'. Vocalist Kelly Shaefer popped up in a Stoner/doom metal band called Neurotica, which has since disbanded.

Atheist reformed in 2001 and still try to play live as much as possible, although that turns out to be not too often.
