To classify Metsatöll's music the most suitable terms for doing that are Epic Metal, Power Metal, Viking Metal, Classical Heavy Metal and Estonian Native Folklore. When comparing the band to already famous groups the most similar ones are maybe Running Wild, 90's Bathory and early Manowar. The band has been influenced by many musical groups along with folk units Garmana, Stille Volk and Estonian folk/classical music composer Veljo Tormis. The name "Metsatöll" means "wolf" in an archaic Estonian language. The theme, which goes through Metsatöll's lyrics are indeed wolves and their harsh trait. Also the wars for freedom that took place on the 13th and 14th century are part of Metsatöll's theme. The new songs have flutes and other traditional instruments used.
